Ecosystems of San Diego
What can we learn from the natural and social ecosystems of the San Diego area? Beto Vasquez, a community college professor of Biology and an interdisciplinary scientist, will help bring our conference theme to life with a place-based introduction to San Diego. At the Center for Research on Educational Equity, Assessment and Teaching Excellence (CREATE) at the University of California at San Diego,
Beto spearheads UCSD’s efforts to increase STEM diversity, engagement and access to disenfranchised communities throughout Southern California. He is an educational advocate for marginalized groups and a great proponent of diversity in Science, technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) fields. He has worked in the non-profit sector, local government and higher education; and has been instrumental in successfully implementing programs supporting disproportionately impacted populations and addressing social justice issues.

CREW: Mapping Our Assessment Ecosystems
How do our assessment systems work now, and what are our individual roles within them? How might we understand them differently if we viewed them as highly unique and deeply interconnected ecosystems? In this session participants will examine our assessment systems as the currently are, laying a foundation to reimagine them during the conference as they MIGHT be.

These discussions will take place in Crews of 16-18 people, which will meet at the beginning and end of the conference. Each participant will be assigned to a Crew based on shared interests and/or geographic location. Crew is your home base for setting learning goals, reflecting, sharing your learning, and planning your path forward with assessment for learning.

Charting Your Assessment for Learning Journey
This session will introduce you to five core shifts in assessment that help us move from assessment OF learning to assessment FOR and AS learning. Participants will reflect on these shifts as they relate to your own contexts, identifying assets already in place to build upon. You will set learning goals and chart a path through the conference to explore assessment approaches that will help your school or system take your next steps deeper into assessment for learning.

Ola Ka Honua: Long Live the Ecosystem! An unKeynote
Limited Capacity filling up

At last year's ALP Conference in Louisville, Cheryl Ka`uhane Lupenui and Gary Chapin, asked each other, "So what do you mean when you say that education is an ecosystem?" The implications seemed so much more deep, profound, and unnerving than anyone seemed willing to admit. Today we invite you join that conversation in a radically designed unKeynote. There will be movement, stasis, exchanges of energy interdependence, and the loss of the illusion of control (that might just be for us!). As a pre-reading, check out the brief "EDUCATION AS ECOSYSTEM" article in the session materials. It can also be found here.

Ecosystems and Resilience: The Shelby County Story
Leaders from Shelby County Schools in Kentucky will share their district's ten-year journey into assessment for learning. Assessment for learning is not an initiative or toolkit - it is a way of working together for students, teachers, instructional leaders, systems leaders and families. Deep change like this takes time, relationships and resilience. The Shelby County team will share how they began, where their journey has taken them, and how they are continuing to deepen assessment for learning in the district.
